Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi: Lartucira Field
April 12, 2025 – January 4, 2026
Outdoor space of Yuz Museum Shanghai and Panlong Tiandi
As Qingming (Pure Brightness) and Guyu (Grain Rain) bring moisture, the warm and humid climate with continuous rainfall creates a natural breeding ground for the growth and proliferation of fungi. In the season of renewal when mycelium network silently branches out, the Public Art Project “Wander”, organized by Yuz Museum in partner-ship with Panlong Tiandi, will unveil the fourth chapter Lartucira Field, featuring a se-ries of outdoor sculptures and a large-scale painted mural by Indonesian artist Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi. The exhibition invites visitors to step into a field filled with art and the wisdom of life, where the mycelium dances with the traditional solar terms.
Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi was born in 1985, Jakarta, Indonesia. He works in installation, painting, drawing, printmaking and video. His research-based practice navigates the in-terstices between aesthetics and the natural sciences. Garibaldi combines his observa-tions into microscopic organisms and nature expeditions with imaginary aesthetic ideas, resulting in a synthesis of natural forms with fantasy. He forages inspiration from dif-ferent environments through the exploration of found specimens and hybrid species, such as lichen and fungi, which play vital roles in the cycle of life. His works are often-times participatory, requiring interaction with audience, allowing his work to reach open-ended, and multi-interpretational outcomes.
As a public art project of Yuz Museum to engage with the community around Panlong Tiandi, the idea of Lartucira Field originates from Garibaldi’s reflection on local cul-ture, ecology and community as a starting point to establish a deep connection. Based on the outdoor space of the museum and its surrounding community as well as the local climate, he will create a series of outdoor, white plaster sculptures, Lartucira Kloumir, spread across the museum’s lawns and Panlong Tiandi. Following the series’ interest in site-specific considerations of various ecologies, these sculptures contain locally culti-vated mushrooms within delicate plaster, the latter material acting as cavities for various forms of fungi that will grow throughout and beyond the presentation’s duration. The mushrooms will sprout and transform within the sculptures, adding a dynamic texture that changes overtime.
In the meantime, Garibaldi will incorporate abstract depictions of mycelial growth on the exterior wall of the museum, translating his continued interest in the biological and aesthetic qualities of various organisms. His paintings often play with dense choreogra-phies of scale and magnified views of invisible biological processes multiplying across empty space. The effect is to both abstract and concentrate our attention to notions of life, decay, death, and regeneration –whether we can hold the ephemeral and enduring together and to see in their interdependent forces a means for connecting and imagining beyond our perceived realities.
The inspiration for this mural, titled Lartucira Komper, came from Garibaldi’s reflec-tions on the cultural connotations of both China and Indonesia. His employs the artistic conception of ink painting to depict organic forms, resonating with the aesthetics of the museum’s architecture, which was renovated from traditional Jiangnan-style residential buildings, as well as its location nearby the waterfront of the ancient town. The mural captures the forgotten history and the passage of time, while also depicting the ceaseless blossoming and continuation of life. It becomes a visual narrative that bridges temporal and cultural dimensions, reflecting the coexistence of historical heritage and contempo-rary ecological consciousness.
The co-creation of the mural involves Garibaldi’s collaboration with teachers and stu-dents, as well as the local community of Panlong Tiandi. And sculpture workshops will be held under the guidance of the artist, inviting participants to interpret Garibaldi’s in-structions for collective mural-painting and plaster-casting exercises, engaging with ide-as and aesthetics of fungal proliferation. Besides, the exhibition will launch a program of Mushroom Hunting, inviting the public to search for mushrooms scattered in Panlong Tiandi. The project aspires to change the way people see nature through inter-active and co-creation experiences, fostering the understanding of life and the awareness of ecological balance and symbiosis of all living things.

Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi was born in 1985, Jakarta, Indonesia. He obtained his Bache-lor’s Degree in Fine Art, Printmaking Studio from the Faculty of Art and Design, Ban-dung Institute of Technology, Bandung, Indonesia in 2010 and his Master’s Degree in Environmental Science from the University of Indonesia, Depok, Indonesia in 2023.
Syaiful, fondly known as Tepu, previously pursued education in agronomy before pursuing experimental fine arts, where he applies his scientific background to create a conceptual foundation for his art. Tepu’s works in installation, painting, drawing, printmaking and video show a remarkably strong vision of art that collides with science in a graceful manner. His creation of an immersive environment was sparked by his interest in the networked and interconnected nature of ecologies, and the evocative power of microorganisms as symbols of death and decay, as well as life. Infusion between art and science transcends through Tepu’s work and gives way to a new gateway of knowledge, which is illuminated within his prints and installations.

About Yuz Museum
Yuz Museum, officially opened in May 2014 in Shanghai, is a contemporary art muse-um founded by Mr. Budi Tek, a Chinese-Indonesian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and collector. As one of the first non-profit institutions along the West Bund Culture Corri-dor, the museum has been following its founder, Budi Tek’s philosophy of “collecting to share”, with the mission of “drawing the world’s attention to Shanghai” and “bring-ing art into people’s daily lives”. Committed to advancing the development of contem-porary Chinese art, actively engaging in the field of art education, and promoting cultur-al dialogues between East and West as its own responsibility, and exploring to answer the question “It takes ten years to grow trees, a hundred years to grow people, then how many years to grow a life of art?” By doing so, it has successfully established a bi-directional parallel between “history” and “future” throughout all its exhibitions and de-veloped a variety of public outreach programs. It introduces the Chinese public to con-temporary art and the world to Shanghai and China through its exhibitions that span across China and the West.
Since its opening, Yuz Museum has been the home of many internationally acclaimed exhibitions such as the world’s largest Giacometti Retrospective, the “Rain Room”, the Asia premieres of Andy Warhol’s “Shadows”, KAWS’s “Where the End Starts”, “Charlie Chaplin: A Vision,” “Yoshitomo Nara” , “Watering the Desert: Contemporary Art from Qatar”, etc., which have had a great impact on domestic and international cul-ture, art, education, and other fields.
Yuz Museum has been active in the world of art and has launched in-depth collabora-tions with many internationally renowned art museums. On October 31, 2019, Yuz Museum Shanghai entered into a landmark collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Qatar Museums to jointly develop and share exhibitions and pro-grams across their institutions.
With its continual development, the museum has been looking into possibilities of fur-ther expansion and made its home in the core area of Shanghai Greater Hongqiao Inter-national Business District. On May 17, 2023, as the new venue of Yuz Museum at Panlong Tiandi was completed and opened to the public, the museum launched the 2nd phase of its strategic plan: YUZ FLOW. In the coming ten years, the museum will carry on with Mr. Budi Tek’s philosophy, further explore how to use “art to grow genera-tions to come”, take “flow with Yuz, breathe with art” as its vision for the 2nd stage, and make a gradual layout shift from a “white box” to a “satellite network”, marking the start of the museum’s 2nd chapter with a brand-new model: “one main space + various encounters”.
In 2024, the Yuz Museum launched a children’s art education project – YUZ DOLAN, which has been planned and developed by our expert and innovation team for many years. “DOLAN” is derived from the Indonesian Javanese language, meaning “play”, and its opening will reshape the museum space into an “art playground” for the partici-pants. Specifically tailored for children, this project is launching diverse content ecosys-tems including creative art courses, art museum education charity events, and artist’s workshops, which are deeply rooted within the Yuz Museum’s professional experience in art exhibitions, research collections, and public education. We are committed to creat-ing an artistic paradise for children to grow happily, express themselves, and unleash their creativity.
